Working at the Chartered Institute

In July 20204 we officially became the Chartered Institute. Receiving a Royal Charter is a huge honour, and underlines our status as the preeminent organisation within the international trade community.

The Royal Charter means we have an ever increasing influence in our field, and it also brings an obligation to strive for higher standards. Joining the Chartered Institute in any role will see you come into a business that is continuously improving. A role within our business will offer opportunities and challenges in equal measure. It’s an exciting journey!

Learn about our values

Lightbulb

Our mission to empower global trade is all about continuous improvement, and this applies within the organisation as much as it does outside it. Leveraging new technologies, finding better ways to do things, and identifying new initiatives is core to how we work. We are always learning and growing. All of which makes the Chartered Institute a great place to work for the curious minded!

Person Arms Up

We want our team members to be happy and healthy, this can be as simple as fully engaging with your work, or as complex as ensuring you are healthy mentally and physically. As a team we promote positive action on all sorts of wellbeing, and respect our team as rich and diverse collections of individuals with different backgrounds and cultures.

Person Circle

We believe a team is stronger than its constituent parts. We collaborate to bring the most diverse range of talent and perspectives to all our challenges. When we work as a team, we can achieve amazing results!

Engage

We want our workplace to be a hive of creativity. Strengthening the bonds between team members is super important. We really believe in the value of collaborating on more than the day to day - whether that’s wielding a paddle in a charity dragon boat race, an evening at the bowling or volunteering together for a good cause, it all builds the sense of team and strengthens the work we do together.

Signpost

Our work is exciting and challenging, and there are days when the going gets tough. By embracing the journey together we can achieve great things through hard work, self-belief and team work. Learning as much from our losses as from our wins (if not more) is how we move forward and get where we’re going.

We call each other Team Members at work, not “staff” or “employees” - Team Members is the term that best underpins the values we believe are core to our success. We celebrate diversity and want Team Members to bring their whole selves to work, so there are opportunities to get involved in groups like our Diversity Champions, because our culture belongs to us all.

The benefits

Our People Services team have put together a really nicely curated package of benefits for team members.

From really key aspects like our pension scheme to more unusual aspects like SmartTech vouchers and EV car leasing.

We have super private medical cover, which can be extended (although this will have tax implications) to family and even covers dental and optician costs, and there’s an Employee Assistance Programme to help if things get difficult.

Explore open roles

A large part of the work that I have been focusing on is the acquisition and creation of templates for the project process.

One team - It’s great to working on this with the Chartered Institute because everyone across the department seems to be on the same wavelength and always open to new changes. Everyone at the Chartered Institute always is focused on a common goal.

Innovate - This will ensure that the next project is as streamlined as possible and that we are creating documents which are easy to understand by others. I help with the streamlining of a new stage gate process for the team.

Embrace the Journey - Ever since starting here there is a great sense that you are gradually introduced to your role and given time to adjust rather than being thrown headfirst and made to deal with the pressures of not knowing what to do. This is great as it means the role can grow around you, grow with your skills and you have time to learn better ones to accelerate your position in the team.

As a student on my placement year at the Chartered Institute, working within the External Affairs and the Legal & Compliance teams, the organisation’s core value ‘One Team’ has been the guiding principle shaping my journey here. From day one, I have felt an integral part of a collaborative unit, rather than a bystander. This value transcends mere cooperation; it’s about synergy, where diverse ideas meld to create something truly impactful. I’ve seen it in action during team projects, where every voice is not just heard but also actively welcomed. It’s a culture which fosters an environment for mutual growth. This unity has made me realize that irrespective of roles, we are all working towards a common goal, creating an inspiring sense of belonging and motivation to contribute my best to the team’s success, which seems truly inspiring and wonderful to me as an intern.

I feel that the company value ‘Embrace the Journey’ particularly applies to my role as the new external affairs Intern. My role in incredibly dynamic and fast paced – with each day feeling like a new journey with its own unique opportunities and challenges. From my experience, I have been working the E-Commerce Trade Commission which was recently established by the Chartered Institute. Given its nature as a new department, my role is constantly changing and I need to be innovative in ways I support the project. I also feel that as an intern, my personal development plays a large role in adding value to my team members and the work I complete. I understand that my development is also a journey and I will trust the process as I continue through the next year.

As a tutor with the Chartered Institute, my role is linked with creating an educational environment that is more than just imparting knowledge. I am committed to guiding students on their academic journey and this is also linked to the company values of "Embrace the Journey" and "Cultivate Wellbeing." Embracing the journey is understanding that learning is a continuous process, and I continually try to create a supportive atmosphere that promotes academic growth and prioritises the well-being of the students. “Cultivating Wellbeing” is the process of understanding how important it is to have a balanced and healthy lifestyle, both mentally and physically.

I am currently studying for my Data Analytics Level 4, this will enable me to support the Client Services team and other teams within the business in data related projects and to analyse findings to gain valuable and helpful insights. It means I can contribute to One Team as I facilitate the sharing of data across our business. As a Team Member I am embracing the Journey as I support the journey the business is taking by sharing data and information as it happens.

I am doing the Level 3 Team Leader Apprenticeship so that I could better help my team with support and motivation in pursuing their end objectives in the Contact Centre. This, in turn will have a positive, knock on effect with the company strategy. My training and implementation of skills will reflect the value of One Team, by allowing me to collaborate with diverse individuals in providing knowledge and skills.

Our apprentices have signed up to the Association of Apprentices where they receive further support with personal development, networking with other apprentices, a forum and events.

As I reflect on my 1-year anniversary with the Chartered Institute, I can happily reflect on how much I enjoy working for the company. Who you work with plays such an integral part in your attitude towards work and my team has been unmatched in their support. They truly care about my wellbeing and my career successes. Collaborating with other departments is something that we often do at the Chartered Institute, and once again, the people we have hired are smart, kind, and passionate.

I really enjoy working for the Chartered Institute. The work is interesting, my colleagues are brilliant, and we’re all working towards a common purpose of helping to empower international trade. I recently attended our annual internal conference which had an amazing buzz.

I like having the flexibility of working from home, but equally really like working out of our Peterborough and London offices. The benefits are great as well.

I love helping companies to thrive, each day, scenario, challenge, remit is different and unique to the next. What is most satisfying is when my team of experts are able to support a client with a solution to their challenges and empowers them with the knowledge and fortitude to continue with their exporting endeavours.

I like working at the Chartered Institute because we are very friendly company, where everyone wants to help you do your best job. It’s great learning about international trade and following our transition from the EU, there’s going to be lots of changes in the sector. So, it’s good to be at a company that’s helping shape the future for the UK and our economy.

I like the fact we get to recruit lots of different roles across the whole organisation and it’s been interesting to watch the development and changes as we grow and expand as a company.
