The All-Party Parliamentary Manufacturing Group (APMG) and the All-Party Parliamentary Design and Innovation Group (APDIG) – All-Party Parliamentary groups comprising of parliamentarians from both benches and both houses – have launched a new campaign: Exported by Britain.
Exported by Britain aims to challenge the dominant myth that the UK no longer exports to the rest of the world. The project will highlight how exporting is happening from every constituency and in turn educate MPs about what is happening in their local area.
The goals of the campaign are to:
- Put the debate about exporting at the very top of the cross-party political agenda
- Widen public awareness of the scale, variety of and support for contemporary exporting from the UK, particularly in the manufacturing and creative industries
- Promote good examples of exporting in every area
- Share resources for businesses looking to export, with signposting to assistance from (for example) Institute for Export, UKTI, British Chambers of Commerce
The project is building on the success of 2011’s Made By Britain – a six-month engagement project which asked MPs to nominate an object or product manufactured in their constituencies. It proved to be remarkably popular, attracting over 300 nominations including those from the Prime Minister and the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Our director general, Lesley Batchelor OBE, attended the campaign’s project launch, which was held at Parliament in Committee Room R of Portcullis House.
The launch provided an opportunity for guests to discuss the project with APMG and APDIG officers, to learn about some of the nominated exports and to understand the importance of exporting for the UK businesses. Attendees were also able to meet representatives, not only from the Institute of Export, but also from UKTI, British Chambers of Commerce and other organisations providing assistance to businesses to help them grow by exporting overseas.
