The Daily Update sat down with Sophie Tothill, the Chartered Institute of Export & International Trade’s new head of membership, to learn more about her experience supporting industry professionals.

In addition to insights into what new events and resources members can look forward to in the coming months, she also shared how professional membership can enhance a trade career at any stage.

Sophie will be providing members with a weekly update of all our upcoming in-person events, member-exclusive meet-ups and webinars, along with any new resources.

DU: Could you tell us a bit about yourself personally and professionally?

ST: My background is in international professional membership bodies and I’ve held senior roles in the public sector. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), where I was responsible for driving membership growth and creating value for members in devolved nations and regions.

Personally, I’m passionate about equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) and believe that collaboration and strategic leadership are key to organisational success. I enjoy connecting with people, and I’m deeply committed to helping professionals unlock their potential through supportive networks and opportunities.

DU: In your experience, what can a professional trade body offer its members and how can it help grow their careers?

ST: A professional trade body is more than just a membership card; it's a gateway to resources, communities and networking, and continuous professional development. It provides members with access to industry insights, up-to-date information and opportunities to learn from thought-leaders and peers.

By offering events, certifications and training programs, professional bodies can help individuals enhance their skills, stay current with industry trends and grow their career. Moreover, being part of a respected community gives professionals credibility and a support system they can tap into throughout their careers.

DU: What has your experience at the Chartered Institute of Export & International Trade been like so far, and how are you settling into the world of trade?

ST: It’s been an exciting journey so far and I have been made to feel very welcome by both my colleagues and our members. International trade is a constantly evolving field and there’s so much expertise within the membership - I’m enjoying the opportunity to work with both seasoned professionals and those just starting their careers.

The Chartered Institute's focus on supporting members at every stage of their professional journey really aligns with my own values around engagement and value delivery, and I’m also committed to providing focussed support for our business members to grow and achieve their ambitions.

DU: It’s been a busy few months and you’ve already introduced new membership events and products. Could you talk us through the new offerings?

ST: We've introduced a variety of new membership events and networks designed to connect members and support their professional growth. These include:

·         Connect & Grow: A flagship series of events focused on networking and knowledge-sharing, bringing together members from different sectors and regions to talk directly to our director general, Marco Forgione.

·         Additional Special Interest Groups (SIGs): These are regular member-led groups focused on key sectors, allowing for in-depth discussions and collaboration.

·         Devolved Nation Member Forums: These forums focus on the specific issues and opportunities faced by our members living or operating in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

·         Student Learning Series: This series has been designed to support students and early-career professionals and offers valuable networking opportunities and career guidance and insight.

·         Regional Meet Ups (planned for 2025): Informal gatherings held across various regions, offering members a chance to network and exchange ideas in a relaxed setting.

·         Mentoring Matters: A new mentorship programme that pairs experienced professionals who want to give back, with those members seeking guidance and support.

DU: How could trade professionals at different stages of their career benefit from membership?

ST: For early-career professionals, membership provides a foundation of knowledge, essential certifications and access to a network of seasoned professionals who can guide and mentor them.

For mid-career professionals, the resources we offer, such as specialised training and development programmes, can help them pivot or advance in their career.

Senior professionals can benefit by staying on top of the latest trade developments, sharing their knowledge as mentors and leveraging the Chartered Institute's platform to expand their influence and thought leadership within the global trade community.

At every stage, there’s something valuable to gain.

DU: What message do you have for trade professionals considering becoming a member of the Chartered Institute?

ST: Becoming a member of the Chartered Institute is more than just joining a professional trade body - it’s becoming part of a connected, supportive and knowledgeable community.

Whether you're looking to deepen your expertise, network with peers or make a real impact on the trade industry, the Chartered Institute offers the resources and support to help you achieve those goals.

It’s a place where your professional development is continuously nurtured and where you can contribute to the future of international trade.

DU: How can members get in touch with you and how would you encourage them to engage with the Chartered Institute?

ST: I always welcome the opportunity to connect with members and hear their insights and feedback. The easiest way to reach me is via email or LinkedIn, and I’m also present at most of our membership events, so feel free to say hello.

Engagement is key, so I encourage members to actively participate in the events and networks, take advantage of the resources, and connect with their fellow members. The more you engage, the more you’ll benefit from the full range of opportunities the Chartered Institute offers.
