The Chartered Institute of Export & International Trade’s head of membership, Sophie Tothill, previews the week ahead for members, including events, webinars, recent news affecting traders and the exclusive resources the Chartered Institute can offer to help.
This week’s instalment features an in-depth look at our new Student Learning Series.
Learning opportunities
The Chartered Institute is dedicated to supporting the next generation of international trade professionals and we’re thrilled to invite our student members to take advantage of our exclusive Student Learning Series for 2024-2025. This series is designed to provide meaningful support and insights to those about to take their first steps in the diverse and dynamic world of international trade.
We recently launched the Student Learning Series with a discussion featuring a panel of passionate members from various sectors—food, pet, government and law—who shared their career journeys and the valuable lessons they had learned along the way. The conversation addressed important topics that our students often seek guidance on, including career paths, industry transitions and how they approach making big career decisions. This session offered a unique, real-world perspective on the possibilities within international trade and how our members navigated their own paths.
Looking ahead, our next session in the series will focus on effective professional networking skills and strategies, helping students understand how to build and leverage professional connections to secure that all-important, first role.
Later in the series, we’ll bring together senior members to share what they wish they’d known before embarking on their careers. This will be a rare opportunity for students to ask personal questions and learn from industry leaders about pivotal career decisions and what they might have done differently.
Student members can watch the first instalment in this series and book a future session here.
The Chartered Institute is committed to supporting the next generation of international trade professionals, and we welcome them to take part in all of our member communities, knowing that they appreciate being able to use our full suite of resources.
Connect online
The next session of Connect & Grow is set for Monday 2 December. Members will hear from our director general Marco Forgione, along with other senior members of the Chartered Institute.
As the year comes to a close, you’ll receive an update on our work, as well as a look-ahead to next year. As ever, there’ll be opportunities for members to network and discuss trade challenges and opportunities.
Upcoming events
Members can vote in our Annual General Meeting (AGM), which will be held at 8:30 3 December.
The agenda, including resolutions, can be found here. Full and fellow members are invited to vote.
The online voting platform is currently still open, although members also have the option of voting in-person at our Import Export Show (IES), held the same day.
Membership and eligibility to vote will not grant access to IES. Tickets for this event can still be purchased here.
Import Export Show
IES takes place at London’s Leonardo Hotel on 3 December.
This year’s event will focus on a variety of topics, such as how a year of elections has reshaped the global trade landscape and how trade can spur growth in the UK’s nations and regions, as well as preparations traders can make ahead of further changes in the EU-UK trade relationship next year.

The shortlist for the International Trade Awards, whose winners will be announced at the end of IES, has also been published.
