In the next of our series of articles exploring professional skills that can enhance your career in trade, we’re looking at project management.
This skill was identified as critical by experts at the Chartered Institute for Export & International Trade for those wanting to progress in the sector, as it supports an understanding of complex supply chains.
‘Seven Skills for Success in Global Trade’, published last month, explained the benefits of developing key skills and offered relevant training solutions.
Knowing the actors
The report highlights that project management skills can help trade professionals engage with the entire supply chain, encouraging them to think about all actors in the process.
Viewing trade through this lens can broaden your perspective, moving from an operational approach towards addressing documentary and customs concerns to a more strategic mindset, “think[ing] several steps ahead”.
This can help to mitigate problems before they even arise and prevent costly delays:
“Organisational skills and a forward-thinking mentality will enable your team to closely analyse the supply chain, assessing the level of risk at each stage and creating contingency plans as needed.”
These skills also support the broader external assessments (e.g. PESTLE) that professionals would be expected to undertake as their careers advance.
The paper notes “political instability and unforeseen events overseas can impact supply chains – whether that’s pandemics, international conflicts or the effects of climate change”, so seeing the bigger picture will always be an integral skill in international trade.
‘Bird’s-eye view’
Chartered Institute trade expert Suzanne Alecrim said that the skill is especially vital for those wanting to advance their career because it supports a better understanding of the many actors and ‘moving parts’ involved in international trade.
Project management offers a “bird’s-eye view of the supply chain”, which is critical for a team to understand “what tools are needed to make it operate effectively”.
“Knowing the roles and responsibilities of all parties, and where the challenges lie, can help mitigate issues and even develop contingency planning to remain in control and pivot quickly in the event of disruptive changes.”
